Retail Sales Associate at Sparrow Art Supply
Posted: 03/03/2025Sparrow Art Supply is looking for a part-time Sales Associate to join our small but dedicated retail team. We are more than just a shop—we are a community hub for artists, and we are looking for someone who enjoys building relationships and offering a personalized, consultative shopping experience.
This role is ideal for someone who loves helping people, talking about art, and maintaining an organized, welcoming space. Our customers often come in to ask questions, discuss their projects, and seek real, human recommendations on art materials. The right person for this role will enjoy these conversations, be eager to help customers find what they need, and have a strong willingness to learn.Responsibilities:
- Customer Engagement: Consult with customers to help them find the best art supplies for their needs, providing knowledgeable recommendations (training provided).
- Community Building: Build relationships with repeat customers and actively participate in the local art community.
- Event Promotion: Share information about gallery exhibitions, our artist collective, and upcoming events.
- Sales Processing: Complete customer transactions using our Square register system.
- Inventory Management: Receive deliveries, unpack shipments, and restock shelves.
- Store Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness, including sweeping, mopping, trash disposal, bathroom upkeep, and window cleaning.
- Social Media Assistance: Post periodic promotions on Instagram.
- Event Support: Assist with hanging gallery shows and in-store event preparation.
- Reporting: Communicate customer inquiries, foot traffic, and store updates to the owner.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous retail or customer service experience required.
- Artistic Background: A background in or enthusiasm for art is essential. While expertise isn't mandatory, an artistic background or personal creative practice is highly valued, as customers appreciate assistance from someone who understands the creative process.
- Customer Service Skills: Ability to handle both enjoyable and challenging situations with professionalism and composure, ensuring a positive customer experience.
- Communication Skills: Friendly, warm, and comfortable with small talk.
- Dependability: Proactive, detail-oriented, and reliable.
- Technical Aptitude: Ability to retain product information and explain it to customers. Has prior knowledge of or can learn to use our Square POS system. Familiarity with social media platforms, especially Instagram.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in art, design, or related fields is a plus.
Hours & Compensation:
- Part-time: 12–20 hours per week.
- Availability: Must be available on Saturdays and/or Sundays (store hours are expected to expand to Sundays soon).
- Flexibility is a bonus! While regular shifts will be scheduled, the ability to cover last-minute shifts when needed is a plus.
- Must be available during the winter holiday season.
- Hourly Pay: $17–$19 per hour, depending on experience, with opportunities for bonuses based on performance.
- Employee Perks: 30% discount on art supplies and a $300 annual reimbursement toward an art class after 30 days of employment.
Please Note: This is not a seasonal position. We are looking for someone interested in a long-term role.
Trial Period: This position includes a 30-day trial period to ensure a good fit for both the new hire and Sparrow Art Supply. During this time, we will assess performance, engagement, and overall compatibility with the role. At the end of the trial period, we will discuss continued employment moving forward.
